Florida Politics: Ardian Zika endorsed by former Pasco state Senator

Ardian Zika has added another backer in his bid to replace term-limited House Speaker Richard Corcoran in House District 37.

The Land O’ Lakes Republican announced Wednesday that John Grant, who represented Pasco and Hillsborough counties in the Florida Senate from 1986 to 2000, had endorsed him in the four-way Republican Primary for Pasco County-based seat.

“For fourteen years the voters of Pasco County gave me the honor of representing them in the Florida Senate,” Grant said. “They elected and re-elected me because I shared their values. Ardian Zika shares those same values and that’s why I am supporting his election to the Florida House of Representatives, District 37.”

Grant joins St. Petersburg Republican Sen. Jeff Brandes, Senate Majority Leader Wilton Simpson, former House Speaker Will Weatherford,  Pasco Tax Collector Mike Fasano, Pasco Sheriff Chris Nocco, and the Fraternal Order of Police in endorsing Zika.

“I am honored to have former Florida State Senator John Grant’s endorsement,” Zika said. “Senator Grant represented the residents of Pasco County for fourteen years in our state capitol. He fought for lower taxes, less government, more personal responsibility and freedom. I am grateful for Senator Grant’s example and for his support and endorsement of my campaign.”

Zika is running against Ryan Boney, Bill Gunter and Elle Rudisill in the primary. Democrats Tammy Garcia and Denise Mestanza-Taylor are also running.

Through April, Zika had raised more than $183,000 for his campaign and had $170,000 in the bank. Rudisill is in a distant second place with $13,500 banked, while Boney and Gunter each have $0 in their campaign accounts.

HD 37 covers the majority of inland Pasco County, including the communities of Land O’ Lakes, Odessa, Heritage Pines, Shady Hills, Meadow Oaks and Moon Lake.

The district is a Republican stronghold. Corocran never faced an Election Day challenger in his three re-election campaigns since HD 37 was redrawn. The seat voted plus-27 for Donald Trump in 2016.

Florida Politics: Pasco police union endorses Ardian Zika for HD 37

Republican Ardian Zika announce Monday that he’d picked up an endorsement for his House District 37 bid from a Pasco chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police.

“It gives me great pleasure to give you the endorsement of the Fraternal Order of Police, Pasco County Sheriff’s Lodge 29,” said R.W. “Skip” Stone, President of the FOP Pasco County Sheriff’s Lodge 29. “We represent the members of the Fraternal Order of Police in Pasco County and are entrusted to looking after their best interest while they serve the citizens of Pasco County.

“We are grateful for your support of public safety and are confident you will be a fair and impartial voice. Thank you for your commitment to public service, public safety, and our members.”

The police union’s nod was preceded by another major law enforcement endorsement. Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco and Pasco Tax Collector Mike Fasano announced last week that they were backing Zika in the four-way Republican Primary for HD 37, currently held by termed-out House Speaker Richard Corcoran.

Zika, a Land O’ Lakes businessman who immigrated to the U.S. from Kosovo in the 1990s, said he was honored to be Lodge 29’s pick for the Florida House.

“The Fraternal Order of Police represents the women and men who put their lives on the line every day to keep us safe and secure. I am thankful for their willingness to serve and protect us daily and appreciate the sacrifice their families make so they may serve our community,” Zika said. “Our law enforcement professionals and their families have earned our respect and appreciation and I am humbled to have their support this election.”

He faces Ryan Boney, Bill Gunter and Elle Rudisill in the Republican Primary. Democrats Tammy Garcia and Denise Mestanza-Taylor are also running, though HD 37 is a safe GOP seat.

Through April, Zika held a commanding lead in the money race. He has so far raised more than $183,000 and has $170,000 on hand, followed by Rudisill with $13,500 banked and Boney and Gunter each with $0 in their campaign accounts.

HD 37 covers the majority of inland Pasco County, including the communities of Land O’ Lakes, Odessa, Heritage Pines, Shady Hills, Meadow Oaks and Moon Lake.

Florida Politics: Ardian Zika adds two major endorsements for HD 37 campaign

Land O’ Lakes Republican Ardian Zika announced Monday that Pasco Tax Collector Mike Fasano and Sheriff Chris Nocco have endorsed his campaign to succeed House Speaker Richard Corcoran in House District 37.

“Ardian Zika left a civil war-torn country to seek freedom and opportunity in the United States. I’ve represented the people of Pasco County, as their Tax Collector, as their State Senator and as their State Representative and I know what it takes to stand up and fight hard for the little guy and gal,” Fasano said. “I believe Ardian Zika has what it takes to fight hard for the residents of Pasco in our state capitol. Ardian’s integrity, character and faith guide his life and I know he will fight hard for us and represent us well as our State Representative.”

Nocco’s endorsement also touched on Zika’s roots. The Pasco businessman immigrated to the United States from Kosovo in 1997, when the now-independent nation was steeped in conflict.

“Ardian Zika has seen firsthand what happens when people are not safe and secure in their own homes and communities. Ardian fled a country torn by terror and fear, to seek hope and opportunity in the United States,” Nocco said. “Ardian’s path to freedom hasn’t been easy, but his dedication and perseverance led him to earn a degree, become a community banker and operate his own small business. Ardian’s commitment to his family and to his community shines through.  His dedication to seeing each and every person reach their goals is evident. This election, Ardian Zika has my strong support and I hope he can count on your support too.”

Zika, who runs Guardian Street, said he was “humbled” in a statement accepting the endorsements from Fasano and Nocco.

“Both of these men have given selflessly to serve Pasco County and make our community a better place to live and work. I am deeply grateful for their commitment to our community and to each and every resident in Pasco County. I am honored to have received their joint endorsement and am truly appreciative of their support and their endorsement this election,” Zika said.

Past endorsements for Zika’s campaign have come in from St. Petersburg Republican Sen. Jeff Brandes, Senate Majority Leader Wilton Simpson and former House Speaker Will Weatherford. Zika’s campaign announced last week that it had gathered enough signatures to make the HD 37 ballot by petition.

He faces Ryan Patrick Boney, Bill Gunter and Elle Rudisill in the Republican Primary, while Tammy Garcia and Denise Mestanza-Taylor are competing for the Democratic nomination.

Through the end of March, he was far ahead of his competition in fundraising with $166,578 raised and $155,117 in the bank. Rudisill had next-best fundraising total, with $13,628 raised and $13,384 on hand.

HD 37 covers the majority of inland Pasco County, including the communities of Land O’ Lakes, Odessa, Heritage Pines, Shady Hills, Meadow Oaks and Moon Lake.

The electorate is about 43 percent Republican, and 29 percent Democrat with 24 percent belonging to no party. Corcoran hasn’t faced a major-party challenger in the Republican stronghold since it was redrawn in 2012.

Florida Politics: Ardian Zika makes HD 37 ballot by petition

Pasco County Republican Ardian Zika announced Monday that his House District 37 campaign had gathered enough signatures to make the ballot by petition.

The campaign said it has collected and submitted 1,225 petitions, which equates to 1 percent of the voter registration in HD 37. Qualifying by petition allows candidates to avoid paying a fee to the Florida Division of Elections.

Zika’s announcement comes seven weeks before the qualifying period for state offices begins.

“Pasco County is my home and where my wife and I are raising our children. We love Pasco County and believe our community’s brightest days are ahead of us,” the Land O’ Lakes businessman said in a press release.“We’ve knocked on thousands of doors across House District 37 and its truly humbling and overwhelming to have more than 1,225 voters in House District 37 sign their name to a petition, allowing my name on the ballot. I’m also very appreciative to our friends and family who have volunteered countless hours to help us qualify for the ballot.

“It is an honor and a privilege to have such strong support from across our community and I am grateful for each and every person who has signed the petition, volunteered their time and financially supported our campaign. I truly believe that by working together, we can accomplish great things. I invite you to join us as, together, we work tirelessly to make Pasco County an even better place to live, work, worship and raise a family.”

Zika, who immigrated to the United States from Kosovo in 1997, is running in a four-way primary for HD 37, currently held by termed-out House Speaker Richard Corcoran.

He faces Ryan Patrick Boney, Bill Gunter and Elle Rudisill in the Republican Primary, while Tammy Garcia and Denise Mestanza-Taylor are competing for the Democratic nomination.

Through the end of March, Zika had a commanding lead in the money race with $166,578 raised and $155,117 in the bank. Rudisill is in a distant second place with $13,628 raised and $13,384 on hand.

Garcia has about $6,000 on hand, followed by Gunter with $4,400, though he hasn’t shown any new contributions since July. Boney and Mestanza-Taylor both have $0 in their accounts.

Zika is also leading his primary opponents in endorsements, having earned the backing of St. Petersburg Republican Sen. Jeff Brandes, Senate Majority Leader Wilton Simpson and former House Speaker Will Weatherford.

Florida Politics: Ardian Zika crosses $150K fundraising mark in HD 37

Republican Ardian Zika announced Monday that his campaign to succeed House Speaker Richard Corcoran in House District 37 crossed the $150,000 mark in total fundraising last month.

Zika raised $8,325 in January and has now raised $155,762 since filing for the Pasco County-based seat in August. He had just shy of $148,000 in the bank on Jan. 31.

“I am humbled by the strong outpouring of support and am grateful for the trust and confidence so many contributors from across our community have placed in our campaign,” Zika said in a press release.

“As we share our story and our vision for the future of Pasco County, more and more people from across our community are joining our team. I am grateful for the outpouring of support and look forward to continuing to build on our campaign’s momentum as we race toward the primary election.”

The new report showed 14 contributions including a half dozen for the primary campaign maximum of $1,000, while spending came in at $1,831.

Top donors included law firm McGuire Woods, real estate group Mar-Lil, Tampa-based business capital group B & B Capital Ventures, Wesley Chapel auto dealer Patrick Abad, and political committees Florida Acre and FAIAPAC.

Expenditures included a $1,520 payment to Tampa-based Farmore Marketing for web development, $220 to the West Pasco Republican Club, and a handful of fees paid to online fundraising platform Anedot.

Zika is up against Elle Rudisill, Bill Gunter and Ryan Boney in the Republican Primary for HD 37, and so far none of his opponents have put up much of a challenge when it comes to fundraising.

Rudisill filed for the seat back in June and has about $13,000 in the bank after tacking on $1,075 in January. Gunter posted no contributions for the month, making it his fourth report in a row where he neither raised nor spent a dime, while Boney filed for the seat at the end of January and has not yet reported any contributions.

Democrat Tammy Garcia, who also filed in late January, posted a waiver in lieu of a campaign finance report for her first few days in the campaign.

Republicans dominate the voter roll in the west and central Pasco district. Corcoran didn’t face any Election Day opposition in his three re-election campaigns since the seat was redrawn.
